From Owner to Owner
Spike's Frenchie Guide was built by a French Bulldog owner who's been through the trenches — the midnight vet visits, the allergy struggles, the BOAS concerns, and the overwhelming amount of conflicting information online.
After years of caring for French Bulldogs and helping dozens of other owners navigate the same challenges, I realized there was no single, comprehensive, science-backed resource that covered everything a Frenchie owner actually needs to know. So I built one.
Meet Spike
This site is named after Spike — my dark brindle French Bulldog and the reason this guide exists. Spike has dealt with the full range of breed-specific challenges: BOAS symptoms that required careful monitoring, seasonal allergies that took months to identify, skin fold infections I had to learn to manage, and the kind of breathing noises at 2 a.m. that send a first-time Frenchie owner into a panic.
Every page of this guide reflects real decisions made in real situations — what worked, what didn't, what I wish I'd known earlier, and what the science actually says versus what you read in Facebook groups.
First-Hand Experience
The content on this site isn't written from research alone. It comes from lived experience:
- Navigating BOAS grading consultations and understanding when surgery is and isn't necessary
- Running elimination diets to identify food triggers causing skin flares
- Learning proper wrinkle care after dealing with tail pocket infections
- Building relationships with veterinary specialists — including brachycephalic-experienced vets — who shaped how I think about this breed's health
- Helping other Frenchie owners in online communities work through similar problems, which clarified what questions people ask most and where the real gaps in information exist
Our Approach
- Science first — Every health claim links back to veterinary studies (PubMed, VetCompass), board-certified specialists, or official breed organizations (AKC, FBDCA).
- No fluff — Straight answers based on evidence. We don't make claims we can't back up.
- Practical — Step-by-step guides you can actually follow. Written by someone who uses them.
- Honest — French Bulldogs are wonderful dogs with real health challenges. We don't sugarcoat the issues or downplay the costs.
- Always learning — This guide is updated as new research becomes available.
How We Write Each Article
Every article on this site follows the same process:
- Primary source research — We start with peer-reviewed studies (PubMed, PMC), VetCompass epidemiological data, and official breed organization guidelines — not other pet blogs.
- Specialist cross-reference — Health claims are cross-referenced against board-certified veterinary specialists, including Dr. Kraemer (Vet4Bulldog), the FBDCA Health Committee, and the Merck Veterinary Manual.
- Owner-experience filter — We apply a practical filter: does this match real-world experience? Does it actually work for the breed?
- Clear sourcing — Every article includes a Sources section at the bottom with direct links to the studies and references used.
- Honest limitation disclosure — Where research is limited or conflicting, we say so explicitly rather than presenting one view as settled fact.
Our Sources
We rely on the following types of sources:
- Peer-reviewed studies — Published on PubMed and PMC (National Library of Medicine)
- VetCompass (RVC) — The Royal Veterinary College's epidemiological database covering hundreds of thousands of UK dogs
- Board-certified veterinary specialists — Dr. Kraemer (Vet4Bulldog), Dr. Karen Becker, Dr. Judy Morgan, Dr. Jan Bellows
- Official breed organizations — AKC, FBDCA, Bulldog Club of America, OFA
- Clinical references — Merck Veterinary Manual, veterinary textbooks
Accuracy & Updates
Veterinary science evolves. Recommendations change. We take accuracy seriously:
- Articles are reviewed and updated when new research is published or existing guidance changes
- Each article shows a "Last updated" date so you know how recent the information is
- If you find an error or outdated information, please contact us — we investigate and correct promptly
- Cost estimates are approximations based on available data and vary by location and provider

What This Site Is Not
- Not a substitute for a veterinarian — we are not vets and this is not medical advice
- Not affiliated with any breeder, pet store, food brand, or supplement company
- Not written by AI — every page is written and reviewed by a real French Bulldog owner with years of hands-on experience
- Not perfect — we make mistakes and we fix them when we find them
